Words of Radiance (Stormlight Archive #2)

We are going to have the same trouble reviewing this book as we did with reviewing The Way of Kings. There are simply only so many times and so many ways that we can talk about how much we love it.

If forced to sum up the world of Roshar in one word it would have to be “vibrant.” The detail that has gone in to creating this world is simply awe-inspiring. Religion, history, myths, they even have their own kind of science and engineering (fabrials). What makes it even better is that Sanderson manages to give us all these details and immerse us in this world without Robert Jordan-style 20 page monologues.

That’s not to say that there are not a few slow parts. Coming in at over 1000 pages and 48 hours of audio that it is kind of expected that not all of the story will be breakneck speed though. The first few parts of the book do feel a little bit like a typical middle-of-the-series book. A lot of time was spent setting things up but not much actually happening.

This is especially the case in Kaladin’s portion of the story. Then there was the duel and after that everything got much more engaging. To balance out the slow speed of Kaladin’s story, Shallan was more involved in the story this time around and a lot of the focus of Words of Radiance is on her.

This series so far is epic fantasy in every sense of the term.
